Armagh Cathedrals

Armagh Cathedrals
Armagh Cathedrals

Armagh City has two beautiful cathedrals that welcome a large number of visitors every year. St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral stands on the hill from which the City of Armagh derives its name, Ard Macha, the hill of Macha. Less than half a mile away, on the adjoining hill, is its sister, St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

Armagh City and District Council were keen to embrace new digital technology to further enhance the visitor experience at the Cathedrals.  We worked with them to scope the various digital solutions that could be introduced, before identifying that an indoor app would be the optimum solution to serve as the definitive interactive audio visitor guide experience, educating visitors about the two Cathedrals with engaging and user friendly content exploring over 1,500 years of history in the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland. It was key that this solution could easily be kept updated by the council staff, so we provided an app with our bespoke Content Management System that allows easy updating of all content by the client.

As always, we worked closely with the Cathedral and council teams and heritage experts, carrying out in-depth research to uncover mesmerizing Christian Heritage stories and quirky facts that would make the audio guide so engaging. We also sourced other local information so that visitors would be encouraged to explore the area and extend their stay.

With a rich suite of content gathered, we began the app development process with our highly skilled app developer team. Armagh City and District Council were kept up to date at all stages of the development process, reviewing prototypes and beta versions as the project progressed.

Alongside the technical development work going on, our professional copywriters were busy curating content, and developing app written content and audio tour scripts. When we were all happy that the scripts fully captured the essence of the Cathedrals, voiceovers were recorded using professional actors, which added further to the outstanding quality of the audio tour.

Due to our innovative technology, all our apps work offline so visitors never miss accessing the data that they need.  The Armagh app also uses offline pdf mapping within the cathedrals, as well as GPS tracking between the Cathedrals so that visitors can track their location without incurring hefty 3G charges.

In addition, we developed and installed three iBeaken points to link the two cathedrals.  iBeaken allows any smartphone user to scan a QR code, tap an NFC or enter a unique url to access a portal of info which can include text, imagery, audio and visual.  Small specially designed outdoor wall plaques were installed at key points between the two historic sites, encouraging visitors to enjoy the route and visit both cathedrals.
